Figurative Language: Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like the noise it describes.

Examples:

abracadabra blast chirp clout drop whizz
ahem bleat chitchat cluck drum whoop
baa blubber chomp clunk drumming whop
babble blurt choo-choo cock-a-doodle-doo dump wretch
bam bong chortle cough echo yank
bang bonk chug crack fizz yell
banging boo clack crackle flash yelp
bap boom clang crash flick yip
barf bow-wow clanging creak flicker zap
bark brush clank creaking flip zigzag
bash bubble clanking crisp strum zing
bawl bump clap croak tick zip
bawling burp clapping crumple tremble zipper
beep buzz clash crunch waffle zoom
belch buzzing clatter cuckoo whack
belching cackle click ding whine
blab caw clink dingdong whirl
blare chatter clip-clop dong whispered
blaring cheep clop drip whistle

Onomatopoeia in a poem:

The Ride Home

The engine goes vroom as the big bus rolls,
While backpacks go thud in jumbled-up shoals.
Laughter goes ha-ha from the very back seat,
As gum makes a pop in a sugary beat.
The brakes screech eeek as we near my street,
I hop off with a whoosh — freedom’s so sweet!

Go Bulldogs!!
